According to the Danish technology paper, Ingeniøren, the communal digital signature of Denmark, NemID, which by 2011 will be the only key to accessing home banking and public services, is facing threats of more advanced hacker attacks.

According to the Danish technology paper, Ingeniøren, the communal digital signature in Denmark, NemID, which by 2011 will be the only way to access home banking and online public services is facing threats of new and advanced hacker attacks.

NemID, which translates to “easy ID”, was introduced to replace previous digital signatures and make online access to personal data more secure. However, in an article in Ingeniøren IT experts express their concern with centralizing the access to sensitive data. According to the experts, NemID will be an attractive target for hackers as the centralized storage of digital access keys allows them to tap into greater amounts of personal data.

“If anyone finds a structural flaw in the security, they will have circumvent the architecture of the system in a way that is very frightening,” says Ulf Munkedal, CEO of the IT security company Fortconsult A/S.

The new key system provides the user with a username, a password and a unique set of key codes on a piece of paper, with which the user gains access to a private, encrypted key stored on a central server.

Even though hacking into this system has become more complicated through the use of single use key codes, it is nevertheless possible through a so-called “man in the middle” attack, through which the hacker taps into passwords sent by the user to his or her home banking system.

In spite of the potential risk, experts believe that the new system is safer than the previous digital signatures. However, they are certain that due to the greater economic incentive of hackers, NemID will experience more sophisticated attempts to hack into the system. As a result, they encourage the Danish banks to explore new technologies to guard themselves against new hacking measures.

A Dane turns himself into the police saying he illegally made legal copies of his private DVD collection.

Here’s a bit of genius.

Danish law allows people to make copies of DVDs for personal use.

However, Danish also law criminalizes disabling Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies that prevent people from making their legal copies personal copies.

Got that? A contradiction.

Enter Henrik Anderson.

The Danish citizen made personal copies of 100 DVDs and told the anti-copyright group Antipiratgruppen all about it. He asked that they take him to court so they could figure out the law. The group’s lawyers never got back to him so he reported himself to the police.

As TorrentFreak writes:

In order to force his government’s hand on laws which allow him to copy DVDs for his own personal use, but forbid him to remove the DRM in order to do so, he decided to turn himself in…

…”I’ve started this because I don’t want to be a criminal.”

The full story about how to illegally make legal copies of a private DVD collection is available via TorrentFreak
